Marita Zoma successfully defended her PhD thesis at the Institute of Oncology Research (IOR) in Bellinzona on March 12, 2018. Her thesis project entitled “Epigenetic consequences and therapeutic implications of ERG transcriptional activation in prostate cancer” was carried out in the Prostate Cancer Biology unit of the IOR directed by Dr. Giuseppina Carbone. The thesis describes a novel mechanism of oncogenic activation of the ETS transcription factor ERG and its impact on prostate cancer progression. Part of her PhD project was presented in 2017 at the Annual Congress of the European Association of Urology in London, and received the best poster award.
The PhD thesis committee was composed by Prof. Jean Bourhis (President) Professor at the University of Lausanne, Dr. Giuseppina Carbone and Prof. Carlo Catapano of the Institute of Oncology Research, and the external examiners Dr. Luca Varani of the Institute of Research in Biomedicine and Dr. Anna Groner of Basilea Pharmaceutica, in Basel (CH).
Marita received the “PhD in Life Sciences” from the University of Lausanne.
