The lOR Institute of Oncology Research is part of the Research Division of the Oncology Institute of Southern Switzerland (IOSI), the comprehensive cancer center of the Ente Ospedaliero Cantonale (EOC), and is the main facility for basic and translational research at the IOSI. The Laboratory was established in 2003 in Bellinzona, Canton Ticino, and is located in the Institute for Research in Biomedicine (IRB).

The Institute currently employs about 50 researchers. The Institute is directed by Carlo Catapano MD, PhD and comprises different groups working in the areas of tumor biology, genomics, molecular oncology and experimental therapeutics. The expertise available in the Institute spans from cell and molecular biology to molecular pharmacology, genomics and bioinformatics.

IOR serves also as a training facility for Swiss and international undergraduate and graduate students, post-doctoral and clinical fellows in collaboration with Swiss and Italian Universities. Educational and training programs include programs for doctoral students run in collaboration with the Universities of Geneve and Lausanne, and for undergraduate students in collaboration with Universities of Milan and Insubria.

The Institute is also an integral component of the clinical research activities of the IOSI participating in translational studies and multi-center clinical trials and providing expertise, facilities and technical support for pharmacodynamics, pharmacogenomics and molecular follow-up studies.
